How To Clear Your Skin When It’s Losing Its Sh!t

We’ve all been there! Sometimes our skin is so angry with us from treating it poorly it retaliates with a sore, inflamed breakout. Don’t worry, I’ve got the cure for that.

Here are some steps I take when my skin is absolutely losing it’s sh!t.

“Cool It Down”

You know when your breakout is so monster it actually throbs? The redness just won’t seem to go away and the small buddy on your chin is slowly starting to become it’s own human. Well – cool it down. Yes, literally. Get one of those ice roller things off amazon and use it on your face. The cold will help bring the inflammation and swelling down and help your zit(s) begin to heal! You do not need to spend a lot of money on these. Just stick it in the freezer and let it get cold and then roll it on your face when your breakout is feeling super ouchie. If you’re worried about cleanliness wipe it with some rubbing alcohol.

Turmeric, Zinc & Probiotics

Most of the time my acne is coming from within. I’ve either overdone it with the alcohol or had one too many Big Macs. When my breakouts are especially gnarly on my chin area I reach for Turmeric, Zinc and my Probiotics. Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory so it will help bring down redness and swelling. Zinc is also an anti-inflammatory so taking this combo is great. I usually do this before bed and then the next day my breakouts have gone down significantly. Lastly, invest in a daily probiotic. Not only is this good for your gut but it also helps with… yep you guessed it, inflammation!!! Notice a pattern here? Here’s some links to the supplements I take below. Cut Out Acids

I used to use a lot of exfoliating acids on my face EVERY day. I started breaking out badly around my chin area and my skin was super tight, dry and dull. Turns out I was using way too much acid and damaging my lipid barrier, which is what helps your skin hold moisture. My dermatologist told me to cut out acids and use them maybe once a week if I need to. I noticed an IMMEDIATE difference in my skin. So if you’re using any hardcore acids on your face and suffering from breakouts maybe cut them out for a little while or at least cut back on your usage.

Say Bye To Caffeine

Coffee doesn’t cause acne but it can make it worse. Caffeine can heighten the stress in your body. The stress hormone called cortisol can increase the amount of oil produced by your sebaceous glands, which can then lead to a breakout. So if you’re breaking out maybe take a break from the coffee for a bit! I don’t drink coffee so this was never an issue for me but I have friends who definitely have seen a difference in their skin when they cut back on the caffeine.

STOP Taking Biotin

Ya those hair, skin and nail vitamins? Horrible for your skin. An excess of biotin can cause major hormonal acne, which is the acne that is the hardest to get rid of! As soon as I stopped taking my hair vitamins my skin began to clear up. So check the supplements you’re taking and see if they are necessary – if they have a lot of biotin in them I would say toss them.

Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate

Yes, even you oily girls should take this advice. Sometimes when you’re really oily it’s because your skin is lacking moisture so it produces more oil to compensate. Especially with winter here hydration is the key to clear skin. I use ALL hydrating products in my routine and my skin has almost completely cleared up. I do get the occasional hormonal zit but treating my skin to hydrating products has really made a difference in my texture and tone. Here’s some hydrating products I love. These products also help with healing acne 🙂

Caudalie Overnight Recovery Oil: an overnight reparative treatment that revives sensitized, inflamed, dry skin.

The Ordinary Rose Hip Oil: the omega fatty acids in this help repair and heal breakouts. Also great for scarring!

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Oat & Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil: helps destress and hydrate dry, reactive and sensitive skin. This was my lifesaver when I was going through hormonal breakouts on my chin and jawline.

Masks It Up

I pretty much always reach for a mask when I’m breaking out. Depending on how my skin is feeling I’ll choose a mask based on my need. Here’s some of my favourites for breakouts.

Ole Henriksen Cold Plunge Pore Mask: I use this when my skin feels ‘clogged’. It gets all the gunk out and is nice and cooling on inflammation. Clay masks are great when you’re feeling like your pores are super clogged and causing your breakouts. The willow herb in this is nice and cooling and helps treat acne.

First Aid Beauty Oatmeal Mask: I use this when my skin is dry AF and needs a little something. It feels great on the breakouts that are super sore and brings down the redness. Oatmeal is a skin soother so this is great for those gnarly red pimples.

Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask: Ya’ll know I RAVE about this mask because I truly think it works wonders on ALL skin types. Not only is it deeply hydrating but it also has great ingredients like niacinamide, which reduces sebum and is an anti-inflammatory, so it’s basically a zit zapper.

Exfoliate All Da Dead Skin

So I know I said don’t use your exfoliating acids but I didn’t say don’t exfoliate all together. This is going to be a controversial opinion but I truly believe that sometimes your skin needs a nice physical exfoliant to get rid of the dead skin cells that may be causing your breakout.

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant: YA’LL I CANNOT TELL YOU ENOUGH HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS STUFF!! Especially for acne. I truly cannot live without this. It has salicylic acid, oatmeal and tea tree, which is basically the best combo ever for killing acne. I use this at least every other day. My skin has never been so clear, bright and smooth. If there’s one product you buy from this post it should be this. The mini will last you a long time so start off with that if you’re unsure! But I promise your skin will love this.

Ole Henriksen Facial Sauna Scrub: another great scrub with salicylic acid in it. It’s a little more abrasive than the microfoliant but still works well and clears up little bumps and dried out spots. If the microfoliant was sold out I would reach for this.

Tatcha Rice Polish: the papaya enzymes in this support cell turnover so this is great for when you’re trying to get rid of acne scars!

Double Cleanse

If you’re not double cleansing I just want to know WHY? It’s an absolute must if you want to get rid of all the makeup, oil and gunk from the day. Use an oil makeup remover first (yes, even if you’re oily you should use this!). Then cleanse with whatever cleanser you’re using. Also, throw your makeup wipes in the trash. If you’re having bad breakouts and using makeup wipes then they could be the culprit. They are loaded with junk to keep them ‘moist’ and also have high alcohol content. They also are so bad for the environment!!! Throw. Them. Away. Here’s some of my favourite oil pre-cleansers.

Dermalogica Precleanse Cleansing Oil: this stuff really gets all the makeup off your face and is super deep cleansing. The rosemary protects your skin and the lavender is super soothing. Another can’t live without product.

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Cleansing Oil: super lightweight but breaks down makeup like a dream. It’s enriched with a ton of botanicals like evening primrose and lavender. Great for acne prone and sensitive skin.

Sephora Supreme Cleansing Oil: easy on your wallet and skin. Contains cottonseed oil, which nourishes your skin but also breaks down makeup. If you’re new to double cleansing give this a go 🙂

Incorporate Vitamin C

Vitamin c serum is something I recently incorporated into my skincare routine. I’m not sure why it took me so long to do this because it’s been such a game changer. Vitamin C actually helps to repair acne! This is definitely an investment treatment but oh so worth it.

Farmacy Vitamin C Serum: I love this because it’s also super hydrating. I use this every night and my skin tone has improved significantly. My acne scarring is almost all gone! This is a great ‘starter’ serum.

Summer Fridays CC Me Vitamin C Serum: this has a great peptide complex and helps reduce dark spots and hyperpigmentation. It doesn’t have a weird scent like some vitamin c serums can have. I would say this is a ‘medium’ level in potency.

Kiehl’s Vitamin C Serum: this is my favourite of the bunch but it’s SO expensive. You get great results though so it’s definitely worth the price. If you’re looking to really get rid of scarring this is a great option. This would be what I call ‘high’ potency. I definitely cannot use this product every single but would use it more like 3 or 4 times a week.
