I’m continuing this mini series of blog posts with my second instalment discussing my favourite skincare products of 2018. Ready? Okay let’s go!
Fresh Soy Face Cleanser
I have combination-dry skin so finding a cleanser that doesn’t make my skin feel tight is key. This cleanser is great for ALL skin types. It has little to no scent, is tough on makeup, soothes inflamed skin and leaves my face feeling super clean and hydrated! The key ingredients are: amino acid rich soy, rosewater and borage seed oil. It nourishes, balances, soothes and aids in the support of skin elasticity and health. Also, it lasts FOREVER. I bought a full size bottle in January and I’m only just now hitting the bottom of it. If you’re looking to swap out your cleanser for 2019 I highly recommend trying this bad boy.
Keihl’s Ultra Facial Toner
Toner’s are a tricky skincare product to buy because there are SO many with varying ingredients and skincare benefits. I always opt for a hydrating and balancing toner to combat my dry skin. I love this toner because it’s soothing, hydrating and balancing. After cleansing my face in the morning I use this. Toner’s help your serums and moisturizers work better so they are definitely not a step to miss. I think that all skin types can benefit from using this guy. The main ingredients are: apricot kernel oil, avocado oil and squalane, which supports the skin’s natural moisture balance. It’s reasonably priced as well at $25 CAD.
Moisturizer – Day
I’ve sub-categorized moisturizers because I use a different one during the day than I do at night. You’ll be seeing a lot of kiehl’s throughout this blog post because they simple do some of the BEST skincare in the game.
Keihl’s Ultra Facial Cream
I love this cutie for the day time because she is light, hydrating and plumping. This formula is interesting because it actually draw moisture from the air into your skin. This formula has no scent and is a great base for makeup!
Moisturizer – Night
First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream
What I love most about this product is its diversity. You can use this ALL over your body but it’s still gentle enough to use on your face. I love to use this at night because it’s intensely hydrating. When I wake up in the morning my skin looks like I’ve drank about 5 litres of water. It has no scent and is great for anybody who suffers from eczema, extreme dryness or itchy/inflamed skin. A little goes a long way as you only need a dime sized amount for your whole face so this giant tub will surely last you a long time.
Serum – Day
First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Hydrating Serum
Before I use my day moisturizer I always use this hydrating beauty. I love the gel-like consistency and how plump my skin looks after I use it. Again, it has no scent (which I prefer in daily skincare) and really packs a pump in the hydration department. It’s a water-based serum and is formulated for ALL skin types. I’ve tried many hydrating serums but I always find myself going back to this guy. Sometimes simple is better!
Serum – Night
Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate
Are you even shocked to see this in my 2018 favourites? I talk about this product so much on social media and my blog I’m sure you’re all tired of seeing it. But truly of all the products I own this one is my ride or die can’t live without skincare magic in a bottle. I use this before my nighttime moisturizer. It’s an oil filled with all kinds of good stuff like lavender oil, primrose oil, coriander seed oil, jojoba seed oil…. You get the idea. So why is it so amazing? Because the results after just ONE night are INSANE. I wake with smoother and more hydrated skin. It has helped significantly with lightening my acne scarring and is a great oil to use if you’re struggling with pesky breakouts. It smells like a spa and really winds me down for bed time. I will continue purchasing this for the rest of my life. It will ALWAYS be my number one product recommendation.
I have two favourites in this category! If you don’t already double cleanse I suggest you begin in 2019. Double cleansing ensures that ALL of your makeup is off. Before I use any of the above products including my cleanser I always reach for a makeup removing balm or oil. Here is my first favourite:
Clinique Take The Day Off Balm
This product is a cult favourite and I can understand why. It quite literally melts the makeup on your face while you rub it into your skin. I even use this on my eye makeup – it doesn’t sting my eyes at all or cause any irritation. I love how easily it rinses off and how hydrated my skin already feels once it’s been rinsed. It has simple and easy to read ingredients and works on all types of makeup, including water proof.
Palmer’s Skin Therapy Cleansing Oil
This. Is. The. Best. Cleansing. Oil. EVER!!!! I buy mine at Walmart and it’s usually on sale for $7. It melts away makeup, oil and grime so easily and is extremely hydrating as it’s main ingredients are: cocoa butter, vitamin e, sesame oil and rosehip oil. This cleansing oil is also great at helping to diminish acne scarring!
I couldn’t pick just one for this category either so here are a couple of my favourite at home facial peels and acids:
First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Pads
For an every day exfoliation I love these pads. They are gentle enough to use every night (I prefer using acids and peels at night) and are safe for sensitive skin or any of you who have never used a skin acid before. These pads have both lactic and glycolic acid so they will effectively tone, exfoliate, and brighten your skin. Some of the key ingredients are: cucumber, lemon peel and licorice root. These are great if you have any bumpy texture on your skin or hormonal breakouts!
Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Extra Strength Daily Peel
If you’re a regular acid user and you’re looking for something a little bit stronger then these will be your new favourite product. These are very pricy but the results justify the price point. You can expect to see improved skin texture, diminished fine lines, less acne and blemishes and smaller pores!
Moon Juice Beauty Shroom Exfoliating Acid Potion
Consider yourself lucky if you can get your hands on this! It’s been sold out at Sephora for months and Moon Juices’ website charges insane shipping to Canada (sad face). However, this is the strongest and best facial acid I have ever tried. It has AHA, BHA and a five-acid complex. It truly resurfaces your skin and fortify the skin’s natural barrier. It’s radiance in a bottle. If anyone knows where else I can purchase this please let me know in the comments below!
Masks are a great way to give your skin an extra boost whether you’re suffering from a breakout, dryness or dullness. Here are my favourite masks of 2018:
Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask
This incredible brand launched in 2018 and its debut product, the jet lag mask, skyrocketed to Sephora’s favourites list in a matter of days. When my skin is feeling dry and dull I reach for this blue tube of magic. You know when your under eyes look dark and tired? This is what will save you from receiving the “you look so tired” comments. I slather this under my eyes in the morning and let it sit for a good 15 minutes. I then rub in the remainder and voila! Hydrated, tight and bright under eyes. I’m not kidding this stuff is magic. I also love that you don’t have to wash it off. It’s the most innovative and skin-changing mask I’ve ever used.
Herbivore Blue Tansy Resurfacing Clarity Mask
When my skin is breaking out and feels congested I reach for this! It has natural AHA and BHA ingredients and blue tansy oil to help soothe but also combat acne. After using this at night I see a significant improvement in my breakouts. They have shrunk in size and dried up and almost all disappear with just one use. The only bummer to this mask is that it can be hard to find in stores at Sephora. But it’s usually always in stock online!
Ole Henriksen Cold Plunge Pore Mask
This mask is really cool because it actually feels cold on your face! It’s a detoxifying clay mask that diminishes pores and really sucks all the dirt and grime out of your face. My skin feels super clean like I’ve had a facial after I use this. I love the scent as well!
I usually stick to acids as my main exfoliation but sometimes I my skin needs a good scrub to really get all the gunk out.
Ole Henriksen Pore-Balance Facial Sauna Scrub
One of my favourite features of this scrub is that it heats up when you rub the product into your skin. The main ingredients include: volcanic sand, a green fusion complex of eucalyptus and algae, neem seed oil and glycolic and lactic acids. My skin feels fresh and smooth after using it. I only use this about once a week as I have a lot of exfoliating acids already in my routine. I definitely recommend this though if you prefer a physical exfoliant!
And finally my last category! I couldn’t pick just one so here are my favourite facial oils of 2018:
Herbivore Lapis Oil Balancing Facial Oil
I use this oil as part of my nighttime routine when my skin is going through a breakout. It’s super hydrating but also improves the look of redness and blemishes. Don’t let the bright blue tint scare you! It won’t stain your skin or make you look strange (but who cares you’re gonna sleep in it anyway). The main ingredients are: Blue Tansy and Jojoba Oil. I love Herbivore’s oils so much and I can’t wait to try more in 2019.
Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate
If you suffer from dry skin you will love this oil. When my skin is feeling particularly tight and dehydrated I add a few drops of this into my daily moisturizer. It contains ginger root and tamnu oil so it really wakes up your skin while also adding hydration! I love using this on no makeup days for a little natural glow.
That’s A Wrap!
Ya’ll know I could talk about skincare for days so rounding up my absolute favourites was extremely hard. I hope you find some favourites within my little list. Let 2019 be the year of glowy, hydrated and even skin!
As always, thank you for reading.
